Puebla is a combination of different cultures, in which the heritage of the Spanish conquest combines with the vestiges of ancient cultures and the presence of numerous indigenous communities. All of these factors combine to have an impact on the identity of people in Puebla, an identity which can be seen in historic events in Mexico, such as the Battle of Puebla.

One of the most representative icons in Mexico is the china poblana, which, despite being representative of the center of the country, reminds most people in Mexico of Puebla. Another aspect that is representative of Puebla is the state’s extraordinary cuisine, which includes a variety of dishes, including chiles en nogada and mole poblano.

Puebla is widely recognized throughout Mexico as the home of Mexican talavera ceramics, which are sold at stratospheric prices in craft markets and which have been used intensively in Puebla as an architectural decoration.

Another thing that distinguishes Puebla is the strong Catholic tradition of its people: one of the most common myths in the state is that in Cholula (located just a few kilometers from the city of Puebla), some 365 churches were built, but this is a legend dating back to the conquest. The main symbol of this town is the pyramid of Cholula, located in the center of the town. It is 65 meters high and 400 meters long. Nowadays, the pyramid looks like a hill covered in earth and grass with a church at the top.
